Teaching music is a gift, though many of us spend years practising, gigging, and struggling to build our studio just to earn well under the average UK salary.
On top of all this, we're required to support our students, our family, and ourselves. The cost of living is increasing substantially each year, and so we ask ourselves: is this really sustainable?
I get it.
Back in 2018, I was working as an accompanist and teaching assistant at a renowned university - one of the best institutions in the country. All glitz and glam, right?
Wrong. I had high rent to pay in a rubbish neighbourhood, my first child was on the way, and I had to meet an minimum income threshold to legally keep my wife (and child) in the country.
Not fun... (though the mice didn't mind).

Now over five years later, we live in a neighbourhood with good schools, we have not one but two happy, healthy kids.
I should also say that my company - CanKnowPianoâ„¢ - has over a dozen music teachers nationally with hundreds of students across the UK, and my own teaching schedule is completely full with a lengthy waiting list. I'm also a business mentor with the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
I'm happy that my students are happy, and the fact that they have achieved Distinction on average for multiple years running is perhaps a small indicator of this fulfilment.

So what changed, and why am I writing to you here now? Why are you reading this if I have found a way to come out the other side of it all? In a nutshell: because I would like to save you the struggle of going through all this yourself.
