Whether in my own private teaching practice of many years, or in the public high school magnate performing arts arena, the student drives the ship in terms of learning. This applies to the very young beginner onward to the elementary, middle, high school, and college student as well as the senior returning to the piano in retirement.

I teach from the viewpoint of learning from the student as we progress through their musical journey at the piano. Students know of my teaching methods here in the Las Vegas Valley and request instruction based on the relaxed atmosphere of the lessons, my willingness to encourage the student’s input on songs they might want to work on whether contemporary or classical along with my offering of method book pieces, simple sight-reading exercises, technique, etc. The genres covered are limitless. A new student might want to work on the classical repertoire, Jazz piano study, learning how to play piano in a pit orchestra on Broadway, play boogie-woogie, work on full sonatas of Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, etc. The list goes on and is only limited by one’s imagination.

I have always believed that as in learning how to speak, music is very much based on the same principle. The child learns how to speak from the parent by listening and imitating what they hear. Grammar and punctuation come much later. The same applies to music. Having those early lessons based on teaching through imitation and gradually moving to more formal technique, sight reading, etc., seems to create a smoother process to the study of piano, and music in general.

Method books I use for the more traditional piano student would be to work in the Faber, Thompson, Schaum, Bastien, et.al. series up to a point then begin to move into the traditional classical repertoire of Bach, Handel, Clementi, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Chopin, etc.

The jazz piano student would work with Mark Levine’s The Jazz Piano Book, along with deep dives into beginning jazz improvisation, listening to the jazz piano chronology, (Scott Joplin and ragtime, James P. Johnson and Thomas “Fats” Waller for stride piano, then swing, bop, post-bop, jazz fusion, etc.)

Each student has two sides to their lesson schedule book for each week’s lesson. One side is the list of new pieces to work on, piano studies, and the other side is to play through and maintain their list of songs they have completed.

The student can have a traditional piano at home or a keyboard of full size, 88 keys, weighted highly recommended.
